"The Fortezza da Basso today hosts the most esteemed exhibitions of
works of art in Florence ranging from the style trade show Pitti
Immagine to the Handicrafts Trade Fair. Today the function of this
beautiful antique building is a Museum, hosting the major exposition in
the heart of Florence. In the early time the Fortezza da Basso had never
been used, remaining under the power of the State.
The
Fortezza da Basso is situated in a short distance from the famous
Central Railway Station of Santa Maria Novella. It is one of the city's
most imperative monuments from the Medici epoch. It was planned by
Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane in the first half of the sixteenth
century on commission from Alessandro de' Medici.
The complex extends
over an area of almost 100,000 square meters, the number and assortment
of its rooms and places make it an idyllic setting for the conferences
and trade fairs. Actually, after researches studies have said that a lot
of tourists come from all over the world to see and visit this
particular and marvelous antique building.
